Treatment for teeth grinding
Teeth grinding (bruxism) can affect many people, and can cause considerable damage to teeth. The causes are unclear, although stress is often a possible cause.
Damage caused by teeth grinding:
- Chipped enamel
- Flattened, grooved, or worn-down teeth
- Loosened teeth
- Cracked teeth
- Peridontal (gum) problems
- Damage to bridges or dental implants
Bruxism can even lead to jaw muscle and joint problems, or lost teeth.
Possible treatments
We will perform an evaluation of the possible causes and best treatment should you show symptoms of teeth grinding.
Possible treatments include:
- Mouth guards. A protective plastic guard that fits over your teeth when the problem is most likely to occur, typically during sleep.
- Bite adjustment. Correcting unevenness in your bite can reduce the chances of grinding.
- Stress reduction. Reducing stress may make grinding less likely. Ways to reduce stress, such as exercise, may be the best treatment.
- Medication. In some cases, medication may help relieve sore muscles or reduce stress.
- Tooth repair. If teeth have been damaged by bruxism, some repair may be required.
